You know how easy it is to work out with the Centr app at home. But did you know that Centr can elevate your gym experience and results, too?
Getting to the gym takes effort and motivation. That’s why, from specialized full-gym workout programs to weight trackers for logging your progress, our app is packed with features to help you make the most of every minute you spend there.
Let’s take a look at how Centr can help you crush it in the gym.
Take it at your pace
When you open the app in the gym, head to Explore and tap on Self-Guided Workouts. These sessions are designed specifically for the gym – you can follow individual exercises at your own pace, checking your form against the trainers.
You’ll also find this self-guided training style in many of our workout programs. More on that below.
To track your progress in the gym, be sure to use the Logbook on the Centr app. When you select a workout, click ‘Logbook’ to input the weight you’re lifting (in lbs or kgs) on each move, plus reps. That way, you can see where you’re up to and push yourself to keep leveling up.
So much equipment!
When you’ve only got dumbbells at home, the options in the gym can be overwhelming. Let your choice of workout guide you. Or, if you want to use specific pieces, head to Self-Guided Workouts and simply use the Equipment filter to find workouts to suit (e.g. bench, barbell, medicine ball, kettlebell, pull-up bar).
Pick your training style
You’ve exited the change rooms and you’re ready to get your sweat on. You pick the training style and we’ll show you how to use Centr to get results.
1. Muscle building
If your goal is set to Build Strength or Gain Muscle, daily strength training workouts will appear in Your Plan in the Home section of the app. Otherwise, you can head to Self-Guided Workouts and use the Style filter to bring up Muscle Building workouts with Luke Zocchi and Torre Washington.

If you're looking to build muscle, Torre Washington is your ultimate gym buddy.
Need to nail the technique before you start? Simply expand each exercise to see how the trainers do it. Once you start a workout, you’ll see the trainer demonstrating good form at the top of your screen.
Centr is also home to a growing collection of specialized programs custom made for getting gains in the gym. Programs run for a set period of time, helping you to commit and layer up gains as you go.
- Centr Power in Gym – the definitive 13-week muscle-building program
- Power Shred in Gym – cut body fat while maintaining or building muscle over 14 weeks
- Glute Builder in Gym – 8 weeks of targeted lower-body training
- Upper-Body Builder in Gym – build your strongest and most defined upper body in 8 weeks
If you’re new to lifting weights, how much weight should you lift? Our rule of thumb is to select a weight that challenges you but leaves you with 2 reps in reserve at the end of a set. Start light and add weight in small increments. (Check out the Centr Guide to Building Muscle if you need a refresher.)
2. Machine training
The gym offers a whole lot of machines that many of us don’t have space for at home (or won’t have until the kids finally move out).
Centr can help you get maximum bang for your buck with dedicated cable machine programs:
You can also use the Equipment filter in Explore to find cable machine workouts with Luke and Jess.
These programs and workouts can be done on most cable machines in the gym, but specific attachments may be required and differences in machines may mean you need to adjust for certain exercises. Check the program guides for requirements.
3. HIIT, HIRT & strength training
Whether you’re taking on a HIIT HIRT Strength workout with Luke or Ingrid, working hard to conquer Bobby’s HIRT Strength resistance sessions, or burning it up with a program, the gym can help you take it to the next level. Challenge your muscles by taking advantage of gear including heavier dumbbells, kettlebells, slam balls and benches.
Strength programs perfect for the gym include:
- Centr Circuit: Strength – bench and dumbbells
- Hybrid Strong: Tread – bench, dumbbells and treadmill
- 28 Days of Arms – dumbbells
4. MMA
Does your gym have a punching bag? Excellent! Now you can dial up your sessions with Jorge Blanco, and really put power into your punches. With heavier dumbbells at your disposal, you can up your work rate with Tiffiny Hall’s workouts and Power Sculpt, too.
5. Functional Training
Think Da Rulk’s workouts are tough? When you’re at the gym, use the equipment filter to select a sandbag session and haul your mobility and functional strength up a whole new mountain.
6. Bonus Workouts
Our Bonus Workouts are presented in the self-guided format – making them perfect for the gym. Short and effective, you can add one onto the end of your regular gym routine to mix things up and give your training an extra boost.
Simply jump into Self-Guided workouts, tap on Bonus in the Style filter, and you’ll find workouts from Chris, Bobby, Da Rulk, Luke and more.

Da Rulk is heading to the gym with (kettle)bells on! Take advantage of all that gym equipment to level up your training.
Gym etiquette
Don’t be that person in the gym. To save yourself from the dreaded stink eye, don’t forget to pack your etiquette as well as your protein smoothie.
- Hygiene – Wipe down equipment after use with a towel or sanitizing wipes. Bring a water bottle.
- Social distancing – No, it’s not a requirement anymore, but it’s definitely weird when there’s a row of 10 empty treadmills and someone picks the one right next to you.
- Watch the clock – If you prefer a bit of space, visit the gym at off-peak times when it’s likely to be less busy.
- Keep your shoes on – Unless you’re doing a Pilates or yoga class (maybe you’re using those fancy grippy socks!), no one needs to see your feet. No one needs a dumbbell to the toe, either.
- Don’t drop the weights – That big clank might do some damage, and will definitely put other gym goers off their games.
- Put the dumbbells back where you found them – Otherwise the person after you will be forced to run around hunting for a set of 5s.
- Unstack your weights – Be a polite lifter. When you’re done with a barbell, leg press or any other equipment using weight plates, it’s only polite to remove and put away your weights.
- Step away from the weight racks – Sure, you can test out a weight before moving on, but don’t do your full set of reps right there. Move away so others can access the rack, too.
- Look up from your phone – Yes, you can use your phone to follow your Centr workouts and log weights. But don’t block other people from using a machine by sitting there scrolling your entire social feed or taking endless selfies.
Go into the gym with a plan and you’ll get more out. Wherever you take your training – home, the gym or on the road – the Centr Team has your back.
