How many times have you tried to meditate, only to find you’re so stressed out and hyped-up that all you hear is shouting in your head?
This is typical of many people whose only experience with meditation comes as a last resort – when they’re so strung out even the Dalai Lama would struggle to find some clear headspace. For French philosopher and meditation teacher Fabrice Midal, the secret is to engage with meditation on a daily basis.
Being at peace means that we have enough room in our lives for winds and storms and big waves... That is what makes us alive, that is what makes us rich in the end.
"It is so powerful and it works,” he’s said. “And you can do it anywhere, anytime. Before a meeting, in your shower, during an interview or while making love. It's a multi-terrain practice."
A leading meditation teacher with more than 20 years’ experience, Fabrice founded the Western School of Meditation and has published countless books on the topic, all of them with oh-so-French titles like C’est La Vie and, well, The French Art of Not Giving a Sh*t.
That last title is a clue to his brand of meditation, which strips away the “shoulds” and “musts” and instead encourages people to simply be mindful and present with themselves. He encourages people not to think of meditation as a state of total calm, but instead as a way to prepare themselves for the very things that might drive us to meditate in the first place.
“Being at peace means that we have enough room in our lives for winds and storms and big waves,” he said in 2017. “That we have our flaws, our problems, our challenges to deal with, but that is what makes us alive, that is what makes us rich in the end. So let's stop trying to attain calm, and just be more alive.”
For Centr users beginning their meditation journeys, Fabrice offers guided meditations in his inimitable French fashion. As to the sh*ts given, well, that's up to you.
