Ski Machine Strength - Program Guide

Ski Machine Strength - Program Guide

Eight weeks to a ski erg that holds up when the stations stack. One structured plan to build it.

Ski Machine Strength is an 8-week upper-body hybrid program built around the Centr Perform Series Ski Machine. It develops your race-pace ski output and the pulling, bracing, and grip strength to hold that output after sandbag carries, wall balls, and compound work have already taxed you.

Why the ski machine?

Plenty of athletes can ski one clean interval while fresh. The stations are where it falls apart: grip fades, posture rounds, and the pull loses power. The ski erg is hinge-and-pull on every stroke, your lats and hips driving while your arms just finish the job. This program trains that stroke and the strength that protects it at the same time, so your ski holds up inside a mixed session.

What is this program?

Over 8 weeks you follow a structured plan that progressively builds an upper-body race engine.

  • 6 workouts per week in Weeks 1-3, then 5 per week in Weeks 4-8. Sessions run 45 to 75 minutes. Strength, station, and simulation days are longest; mobility and taper days are shorter.
  • A 3-phase progression from mechanics and strength base, to strength and race-pace conversion, to simulation and taper.
  • An open-and-close benchmark so your Week 1 numbers become the target you beat in Week 8.
  • Race-pace ski intervals, threshold work, and compromised station blocks layered in a deliberate order.
  • Strength support with sandbag, kettlebell, wall ball, dumbbell, and barbell.

The 3 phases

Phase 1: Mechanics and Strength Base (Weeks 1-3)

Groove your hinge-and-pull rhythm, build early strength, and log the opening ski benchmark. Read more about Phase 1.

Phase 2: Strength and Race-Pace Conversion (Weeks 4-6)

Raise your carry and lift load, increase station density, and convert your engine into repeatable race-pace ski. Mobility gets a dedicated Day 4. Read more about Phase 2.

Phase 3: Simulation and Taper (Weeks 7-8)

Connect ski, stations, and carries into race-style combos, taper, and close with the benchmark. Read more about Phase 3.

Your weekly schedule

A typical week pairs strength-and-ski days with race-pace intervals, a threshold and skills session, a station or simulation day, and a recovery or mobility day. Weeks 1-3 add a sixth session; Weeks 4-8 run five. Rest is not authored as a workout: place it around your harder sessions as you need it.

The benchmark

You open on Week 1, Day 1 with race-pace 1000m ski repeats, then retest in Week 8 and close with a full ski-and-stations simulation. It gives you real numbers for your ski split, your station pacing, and how well your output survives fatigue. Everything in between is built to move those numbers. Read the full benchmark protocol.

Intensity and RPE

This program uses Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) to set effort. Base work sits around RPE 5-6, threshold around RPE 7-8, race pace around RPE 8, and VO2 or sprint work at RPE 9-10. The goal is rarely maximal. It is repeatable: output you can produce again after you're taxed.

What equipment do I need?

The Centr Perform Series Ski Machine plus a sandbag, a kettlebell, dumbbells, a barbell, a wall ball, and open floor space. You should know basic ski machine hinge-and-pull mechanics before you start.

Recovery and mobility

Universal warm-up, cooldown, and mobility flows support every week, with a dedicated recovery and mobility day. From Phase 2 on, mobility sits on Day 4 to protect the positions you need to hinge, pull, breathe, and brace. Sleep and fuel are part of the plan, not extras.

Is this program for me?

Ski Machine Strength is built for intermediate to advanced HYROX-style athletes who lose time on ski, sled, carry, and upper-body stations, and for ski-machine-owning home-gym users who want race prep with a clear purpose. If you want a measurable block that proves whether you improved, this is it.
