Stop torturing yourself! After years of pushing yourself to do more and to be better, who you are now is in fact enough. Not giving a sh*t allows us to access what is most important, to connect authentically with ourselves, and to feel profound relief as we see the world in new ways.
How we are pushed to our limits
Even without realizing it, we are often afraid of our true selves. Since our childhood, we are told to behave a certain way, to always do more and do better. We’ve lived our whole lives with that in mind, and are afraid to be caught doing otherwise: it’s embedded in our personalities. We are afraid because we never believe that being who we are is good enough.
A woman once told me that when she was a young mother, her own mother discouraged her from praising her child: “You should not tell him such kind words, you’re going to spoil him,” she said.
That’s the environment we grow up in. We think that if we give someone a compliment, if we praise who they are, they will stop trying or making any effort to improve themselves.
We are stuck thinking that we should always push ourselves to do better, to be different – the pressure is always on. And that’s completely crazy!
How we push ourselves to our limits
We’re deeply convinced that change can only be driven by a strong or even violent will. We judge ourselves harshly and kick ourselves in the ass; to us, it seems like the only way to keep going.
We are stuck in this mindset to the point where we fail to recognize how wrong we are! Torturing ourselves isn’t a good idea – it wears us out, it drains us, it makes us helpless.
Let’s allow ourselves to be the way we are
When you meditate the way I teach meditation, without giving a sh*t, you’ll rapidly feel a deep relief, because you’re allowed to simply be as you are. There are no rules for not giving a sh*t, and for how to get into that kind of space. The only good moment is now.
Even the dying can experience this. I’m very impressed by people I’ve known who, even though they were in pain or at death’s door, felt that everything was fine. This is exactly what not giving a sh*t is all about.
You might not be perfect, you might have issues – but can you feel that you have the right to be yourself?
Not giving a sh*t is discovering that you don’t need a reason or excuse to be yourself, and that’s a huge relief.
Nothing is perfect, and it’s perfectly okay
Even if you’re hurt or sad, if the situation you’re in isn’t perfect, you can still be who you are. You don’t need to be perfect, never making a mistake. You don’t need to live in a flawless world where the sun is always shining, where everyone is warm and welcoming, where there is no war, where flowers never wilt.
When we stop giving a sh*t, we discover two things: the root of all life, bringing us relief; and an authentic connection to ourselves.
