First thing first, it’s okay to find yourself in a slump. It happens to the best of us. Maybe we get sick and our routine goes out of the window, or we get busy with work and find our training time slots replaced by meetings. Sometimes we honestly just don’t feel like working out.
But don’t hang out in slumpsville for too long. We don’t want all that hard work and effort to be wasted and we don’t think you do either.
Jump into our top 5 no-fail tips to get moving when you’ve lost all fitness motivation and we’ll see you back on the mat soon – we promise, it’s way more fun there!
1. The 5-minute rule
Next time you think there's no way you can make it through a full workout, make yourself a promise: you'll give it 5 minutes, and if and you still want to quit after that, no worries.
More often than not, exercise endorphins – you know, those natural feel-good emotions – will kick in at the 5-minute mark. Before you know it, your 5-minute session has turned into the full workout, and you've tricked yourself into the sweat sesh you never thought was possible.
2. Movement creates motivation
Luke Zocchi’s top tip when you feel like you’re in a fitness slump? Just get moving – because action creates motivation. “If you get moving, I promise it will all fall into place,” he says.
Take it a step at a time. Get up. Get dressed. Head to your workout. Each action is another small commitment to getting into the fitness groove.
Once you’re there, whether it’s the gym or the living room, and you’re moving through your exercises, you’ll forget about not wanting to do it. “Before you know it, bang! You’re smashing out sets, you’re in the zone,” Luke says. Better still, you’ll feel great for it afterward and will be happy to plan your next session.
3. Make yourself accountable
If self-encouragement and pep-talks just aren’t working, it might be time to bring in the reinforcements.
Text a friend, a family member or even a work colleague. Find someone to join you for a session and make yourself accountable. Training at home alone? Why not dial up a video call and work out with friends and family anywhere in the world!
You wouldn’t stand up your boss for a meeting or no-show for a doctor’s appointment, so making yourself accountable to someone else for a workout is a great way to make sure you turn up and get it done.
It’s also highly likely you’ll train harder with a friend than you would do on your own, putting you well and truly back on track with your fitness goals.
4. Try something different
Sometimes when we’re bored we can lack motivation. We love our workouts, but if you’re going straight to MMA with Jorge every time you might need to shake it up and try something new to reignite your fitness spark.
So we have a challenge for you – go and try a workout from one of the Centr trainers that you haven’t trained with yet.
Have you been avoiding Da Rulk’s workouts because they look hard? Or maybe you don’t think yoga is your thing and you’ve been skipping those sessions with Tahl.
Take the challenge, make a date with a different trainer and a different style of workout and get moving. Rediscover what you love about your exercise journey and all the different ways you can find fitness.
5. Pump up the playlist
The tunes you have playing during exercise can boost motivation and distract you from the struggle, allowing you to push harder when you need to. If you’re stuck in a fitness rut, you need this push more than ever!
Jump into your tired old exercise playlist and revamp it into a fail-safe combo of beats guaranteed to fire you up. If you’re having trouble choosing, Centr has a range of ready-made playlists for you to try out.
Once you’ve picked your new soundtrack, it’s time to give it a whirl.
Yes, that means getting off the sofa, getting your exercise gear on and jumping into a training session with your new tunes – leave that slump behind and get into action.
