If you can’t treat yourself over the festive season, when can you treat yourself? If you’re looking forward to eating delicious food and saying ‘cheers’ with a few drinks, but wondering what that means for your fitness journey, we’re here to make it easy for you.
We don’t want you to have to start completely from scratch in the New Year, but we can’t have you feeling guilty or anxious about treating yourself over the holidays, either. All you need to stay on track is a bit of forward planning, a touch of mindfulness, a little balance, and a partridge in a pear tree. (But not really the last one.)
So, here’s our gift to you: five good reasons you SHOULD treat yourself this festive season.
1. Share in the fun
Just as some people are a ‘social drinker’, there should be no guilt in setting aside your meal plan for a day to be a ‘social treater’. It’s the holidays, so chances are there’ll be a few social invites coming your way! Remember, you’re not guzzling a family meal deal for one, you’re sharing something special with family and friends. Know when you’ve had enough, but enjoy it.
2. You get to decide your treat
Sometimes, we’ll eat something we normally wouldn’t just because it’s there – like that bag of chips that mysteriously disappeared during a Netflix binge. But it’s time to kick impulsive, mindless splurges to the curb. Instead, tell yourself “I’m going to have a treat meal”. It may be your Christmas Day feast. Whatever it is, plan it thoughtfully, pick your favorite things and look forward to it – chances are you’ll savor it a whole lot more.

3. Maintain a healthy relationship with food
A deprivation or ‘all or nothing’ mindset can lead to big blowouts when you just can’t take it anymore. Like Da Rulk with donuts, we all have foods we love that aren’t exactly suitable for the daily meal plan. That doesn’t mean you need to cut them out completely. Keeping your favorite foods a part of your life will help you stay balanced – not only nutritionally, but psychologically.
4. You can always hit ‘reset’
One treat meal isn’t going to set you back forever. If you know you’re the one-treat-leads-to-another type, have your meals for the next few days prepped so you’ve got no excuses to carry on longer than planned.
5. It’s great motivation
We’ve all said it: “Okay, I can have pizza on Friday night if I do an extra round with Luke this morning!” Well, you can actually have your cake and eat it, too. Think of it as an 80/20 split – mostly staying on track during the week, smashing your workouts, then rewarding yourself with something special.
Knowing it’s not a one-time-only deal means you’ll be less likely to overdo it when you get your hands on the treat. And knowing every kick sit is bringing you closer to treat time is a real spur when you’re three rounds into a Bobby workout!
