Brains: we don’t need research to know they’re pretty important.

But how do we protect our brains from the decline that comes with aging? Well, this is where the research does come in handy, because studies have shown that these three simple things may help you stay sharper for longer.

  1. Get a hobby. A worldwide meta-analysis found older people who have hobbies are healthier overall and less likely to have depression. The kind of hobby doesn’t matter, so go forth and discover your new favorite pastime.
  2. Change it up. You know variety is the spice of life, right? And certain research suggests that greater diversity in daily activities is associated with better overall cognitive functioning.
  3. Keep moving. Your brain has always been a sucker for peer pressure, so keep your muscles firing and your mind will follow suit. Exercise has been proven to slow down various age-related changes and remains one of the most powerful ways to maintain high levels of cognition as we grow older.
